The Process Dynamics and Operations Group will hold the public „Workshop on Integrated Multi-formalism Tool Support for the Design of Complex Controlled Systems” on May 25, 2012, at the „Westfalenhallen Dortmund". The goal of this workshop is to present the main results of the European research project MULTIFORM (which is coordinated by DYN) to researchers and practitioners. |

On the 15th of March 2012 Stephan Fischer and Martin Hüfner visited the workshop „Modellierung in der Automatisierungstechnik 2012“ (MAT2012) at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg in Bamberg, Germany.

On the 20th of February 2012 Prof. Engell visited Chulalongkorn University which is the most respected University of Thailand. He discussed with Prof. Paisan Kittisupakorn chairman of the Departments of Chemical Engineering options for the future exchange of PhD students. On the right-hand-side in the picture, the former employee of the DYN group Tanet Wonghong is shown who is now lecturer at the University of Bangkok. |

Prof. Dr. Sebastian Engell, Process Dynamics and Operations Group of the Department of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering of TU Dortmund, (Principal Investigator) and Prof. Dr. Hans Georg Bock, Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing of Universität Heidelberg, (Co-Investigator) have been selected for an ERC Advanced Investigator Grant by the expert panel of the European Research Council. The overall funding of 3.5 million € is recommended for the joint project "Model-based Optimizing Control - from a vision to industrial reality".

On September 20th, 2011, the 50th internal doctoral candidate of the Process Dynamics and Operations Group completed his doctorate. Mr. Ala Eldin Bouaswaig received for his dissertation
“Simulation, control, and inverse problems in particulate processes”
and for his presentation and defense the grade “with distinction”.

The triennial World Congress of Automatic Control was held this year in Milan from August 28 – September 2. About 2.500 papers were presented in 25 parallel oral sessions and as posters.

In June and July, the exchange students Peter Iskaros (left in picture) and Adlai Felser (right in picture) from Princeton University did an internship in the scope of an exchange program with the universities of the university alliance “Metropole Ruhr” (UAMR) at the Process Dynamics and Operations Group. Several groups from the university alliance applied for interns – so we are even more pleased to welcome even two students from Princeton.

On the 19th of July 2011 an excursion to SABIC Polyolefine GmbH in Gelsenkirchen-Scholven formed the closure of the lecture Logistics of Chemical Production Processes in the summer term 2011.
The program for the students included a bustour across the plant site of SABIC and Ruhr Oel GmbH and a presentation about the company SABIC mainly focused on the logistics in general and recent optimizations of the logistics in Gelsenkirchen.
Gaurang Shah presented his work at the 2011 American Control Conference (ACC 2011) in San Francisco, California, USA. The title of his talk was 'Tuning MPC for Desired Closed-Loop Performance for MIMO Systems'. A total of 1207 registrants from 45 countries attended this conference.
